Herring Spawn at SE False Creek Olympic Village - Better habitat, water quality

  • John Harper of the Green Shores Technical Team was facilitating a volunteer team pilot testing the Green Shores Coastal Development Rating System when he discovered this rare herring spawn, the first in a very long time at this location.  The spawn was a result of improved habitat and water quality in the area.

DFO has indicated that they will have the spawn event surveyed. There certainly is an ecosystem services value and if we get a good biomass estimate, we can probably take that to another level.

Mark Forsyth from CBCs Almanac and City TV are interested in covering this story. Mark Adams of Envirowest conceived the habitat island concept.
